Which job is better BANK PO or BANK SO?

Banking sector offers three types of jobs namely, Clerk, Probationary Officer (PO) and Specialist Officer (SO). The vacancies of various public sector banks are filled through a Common Written Examination conducted by IBPS, SBI, RRB and RBI.

Candidates, who are looking for officer grade job profile, usually consider Probationary Officer exam or Specialist office exam. These exams are conducted by two organizations such as IBPS and SBI with the titles as SBI PO, SBI SO, IBPS PO and SBI PO.

The analysis of the most preferred posts can be done on basis of the job profile, pay scale and career prospects.  It will help them to choose the better of the two and they can decide whether to prepare for SBI PO or SBI SO.

SBI PO Tasks and Duties

In order to get this job one needs to crack SBI PO Exam which is conducted in two phases.  It is a Common Written Examination which is conducted at All India level. After qualifying two phases interview is conducted for the shortlisted candidates by SBI Selection Committee.
A Probationary Officer is also addressed as a Management Trainee (MT). The one who is recruited as a PO or MT will have a probation period of job for at least 2 years. The tasks and duties assigned to a Probationary Officer of SBI PO are:

  • Document and Account Verification
  • Banking Process Management like Cash Counters, Authorization of Transactions etc.
  • Professional Link Building
  • Customer Service/ Relationship

SBI SO Tasks and Duties  

SBI SO Exam is held every year. The exam pattern of SBI SO Exam is similar to SBI PO.  In this exam also written exam is followed by an interview of shortlisted candidates except that SBI SO has a expert job profile.
Once you qualify SBI SO Exam and Interview, you are appointed as a Specialized Officer. But as SBI SO, you are deputed to a particular department. Every department in a Bank has its own duties and functions.  The job description of SBI SO depends on the department one is assigned with.
Some of the departments that SBI SO is assigned with are IT, Marketing, Human Resource, Law, Agriculture and Rajyabhasha.
All these departments deal with the queries related to the concerned subject therefore a specialist or an expert in that field is shortlisted and hired for this post.
